Stripe closed my account: how to get your money back

Updated October 2026

A Stripe closure doesn't usually mean your money is gone. In most merchant-reported cases the balance is released after a hold, minus refunds and disputes. Here's how to make sure you get it and what to do if you don't.

Frozen, held or closed right now? Add your case to the tracker. It takes two minutes and helps other merchants see how long holds really last.

Report your freeze

Step by step

  1. Read the closure email carefully. Note whether it says funds will be paid out, held for a period, or held "until further notice".
  2. Confirm your bank account on file is correct and will stay open.
  3. Export your data: payments, customers and disputes from the Dashboard, while you still have access.
  4. Keep handling refunds and disputes through the Dashboard. Each one you lose reduces your payout.
  5. Diary the release date and follow up in writing if nothing arrives.

If the money isn't released

Keep selling meanwhile

Don't open a new Stripe account. Move to a processor that understands your business model, and tell it honestly about the closure. Many will ask.

FAQ

How long does Stripe keep money after closing an account?

Merchants most often report 90 to 120 days, sometimes extended if disputes continue. Stripe's notice states the expected period.

Can Stripe keep my money forever?

Stripe can deduct refunds, disputes, fees and losses it is owed. It is generally expected to pay out the remaining balance. If it doesn't, escalate in writing and use ombudsman or regulator complaint routes where available.

Can I sue Stripe?

The Stripe Services Agreement contains dispute resolution terms that, for many US users, require arbitration. Get legal advice for large amounts.
