How to appeal a Stripe account closure
Updated October 2026
Some Stripe closures are reversed, especially when they were triggered by a misunderstanding about what you sell or by missing documents. Others are final. Here's how to give yours the best chance.
When an appeal can work
- Stripe misunderstood your product (for example, your site wording looked like a restricted category).
- A verification document was missing or unclear.
- A one-off spike (a launch, a viral post) looked like fraud.
When your category is on the Stripe restricted businesses list, appeals rarely succeed.
What to include
- A plain explanation of what you sell, to whom, and how it's delivered.
- Links to your website, refund policy, terms and contact page.
- Proof of fulfillment: supplier invoices, shipping tracking with delivery confirmation.
- Your dispute and refund history and what you've changed to prevent them.
- Anything that explains a spike (launch dates, press, ad campaigns).

FAQ
Does Stripe ever reverse account closures?
Yes, sometimes, usually when the closure came from missing information or a misunderstanding about the business. Merchant reports show that closures for restricted categories or high dispute rates are rarely reversed.
How long does a Stripe appeal take?
Merchant reports vary from a few days to several weeks. Follow up in writing if you hear nothing within a week.
What should I do if my appeal is denied?
Make sure the remaining balance will be paid out, and move to a processor suited to your business. Don't open a new Stripe account.
