Shopify Payments disabled or payouts on hold
Updated October 2026
Shopify Payments is run by Shopify with banking partners (Stripe powers it in many countries), so it applies similar risk rules. You may see payouts paused for verification, a reserve, or Shopify Payments deactivated entirely.
What each status means
- Payouts on hold: usually missing or mismatched verification details. Check Settings → Payments for requested information.
- Reserve: part of your payouts is held to cover disputes. See reserves explained.
- Shopify Payments deactivated: you can't use Shopify Payments, and funds may be held to cover refunds and chargebacks under the Shopify Payments terms.
What to do
- Complete any verification requests in Settings → Payments.
- Contact Shopify Support and ask exactly what's needed and the expected release date.
- Fulfill orders and add tracking, especially pre-orders.
- Check your dispute rate. Shopify documents the card network monitoring programs that can restrict accounts.
- Your Shopify store can stay open with a third-party payment provider while Shopify Payments is off, so set one up so checkout doesn't go dark.

FAQ
Why did Shopify Payments put my payouts on hold?
Common reasons are missing verification details, a mismatch in bank or tax information, high dispute rates, sudden sales spikes or selling restricted products.
Can I keep my Shopify store if Shopify Payments is disabled?
Yes. Shopify supports third-party payment providers, so you can connect another processor and keep selling.
How long does Shopify hold funds after deactivation?
Merchants commonly report holds of around 90 to 120 days to cover chargebacks, but Shopify's notice states the specific terms.
