PayPal 180-day hold explained
Updated October 2026
A 180-day hold usually comes after PayPal permanently limits an account. PayPal keeps the balance for up to 180 days to cover reversals, chargebacks and claims, then lets you withdraw what remains.
How the 180-day hold works
The PayPal User Agreement allows PayPal to hold funds for up to 180 days if it limits your account, including permanently, to cover its risk from claims, chargebacks and reversals. Once the period ends, PayPal normally emails you to withdraw the remaining balance.
180-day hold vs other PayPal holds
- Payment holds (often up to 21 days): common for new sellers or unusual sales. Released earlier when you add tracking and the buyer confirms delivery.
- Reserves: a percentage or amount held while your account remains open. See reserves explained.
- Account limitation: restricted features until you resolve it. See PayPal account limited.
- 180-day hold: typically after a permanent limitation.
What to do
- Go to the Resolution Center and complete every requested step.
- Fulfill orders and add tracking. Resolve open cases quickly.
- Save the limitation email and note the date. Mark day 180.
- On release, withdraw immediately to your bank.
- If funds aren't released, complain through PayPal's complaint process. In the UK you can then go to the Financial Ombudsman Service; in the US, the CFPB.

Usually only if PayPal lifts the limitation after you provide the requested information. A permanent limitation normally runs the full period.
Why did PayPal hold my money for 180 days?
